At PEP, we believe that education is crucial to the future of our country.
PEP Academies is our flagship social investment project. By helping to inspire learning, these academies are designed to make a positive difference to the lives of our young people.

They not only help to keep children at school, but also give extra tuition in the building blocks of education by teaching literacy and numeracy to Grade 4 learners.

PEP Academies are selected according to specified criteria by PEP's partner in the initiative, Social Innovations, and the Department of Education, which has fully endorsed the programme.

Opportunity for Schools

Last year, two schools in Soweto each won a PEP Academy in a competition giving schools in South Africa the opportunity to win a PEP Academy that would provide after-school core competence training to Grade 4 children.

Due to the high quality of entries, PEP decided to give away two PEP Academies instead of the planned one.

Freedom Primary School in Freedom Park and Dikgbabane Primary School in Soweto both won an all-expenses paid academy for a full year, each valued at R600 000.

This year the academy programme was expanded to Bloemfontein, where Kgato Primary School in Mangaung and Matla Primary School in Bloemside have been chosen as the host schools.

How do PEP Academies work?

  • PEP Academies help provide the building blocks of education to Grade 4 learners.
  • They are run in existing schools and in 2011, PEP Academies will give 1 485 children after school core competence training in literacy, numeracy and life skills.
  • At the end of 2011, PEP will have given comprehensive maths and literacy bridging tuition to almost 4 500 Grade 4 learners nationally.
  • Children are not only given this supplementary education, they also stay off the streets, get a free meal and are kept in a safe environment.
  • PEP Academies initiative has been fully endorsed by the Department of Education.
  • Learners enrolled in the programme have improved numeracy scores by an average of 20 and literacy scores by an average of 29 percentage points.

Because education lies at the core of PEP's social investment, they might for examples do work at schools. In turn, PEP will support their work with funds and by giving them time off work.
